My name is Dave Felton. I read over 100 books a year, fiction and non-fiction, so books are a large part of my life.
However, I am not a total nerd. I also ride a motorbike and enjoy outdoor sports. Enjoying the outdoors, while walking a dog is a great pleasure, surpassed only by listening to the howl of a Kawasaki over 10k rpm. Cat lovers, the exit is over there…and no, officer, I was not speeding.
The urge to write a book of my own is strong, but I recognise that writing fiction is a skill I need to develop. For the last ten years, I have studied psychology, undergrad and postgrad. Overcoming the urge to write in that dry, academic, passive voice style will take some time. To speed that process up, I decided to study as well as write.
In October 2021, I start an MA in Creative Writing with the Open University in England. I have been an OU student several times (business, computing, psychology), enjoyed the courses and made a few friends along the way. I hope this time will be similar.
My aim is to develop as a fiction writer and have at least one book out under my name by the end of the course (September 2023).
We will see what happens. It would be an agreeable change to write under my name and not a pseudonym, as was often the case while working as an SEO copywriter.
As we live in the age of Kindle direct publishing, an obvious question arises; why not just publish on Amazon? No doubt I will, but some external validation in order to avoid writing complete rubbish seems sensible. I would prefer a book deal, who wouldn’t, but realistically I think it is probably better to follow the indie route than collect rejection letters. Life is too short.
