Becoming a Fiction Writer

I have wanted to write fiction for a long time. Although I worked as a writer for over ten years, it was all non-fiction. SEO copywriting was dull, but it paid the bills.

The fiction-writing itch never received the scratch.

This blog is a first step toward scratching that itch and making the coffee shop/garret writer’s dream a reality. We cannot all be a J.K.Rowling or a Stephen King, but we can all drink coffee and call our reading habits ‘research.’

Why Study MA Creative Writing?

As a serial Open University student, the decision to study alongside writing was straightforward. Yet blogs of other OU MA Creative Writing students have proven scarce. It seems strange that those wishing to write professionally so rarely write to showcase their own work.

Perhaps the lack of creative writing blogs is because of a certain reticence to admit to studying writing craft. Postgrad study is not a panacea, and many talented writers have no formal qualifications. My expectation of study is merely to speed up the learning process, important because I am starting later in life. I want to be the best writer I can be and anything that helps speed that process is welcome.

OU Student Blog

This blog aims to inform those considering postgraduate creative writing with the OU. I also will add some fiction and non-fiction book reviews and hope to interview a few published authors along the way.

Eventually, I plan to promote my own books on this site, but they are yet to be written, and I have much to learn about the craft of creative writing.

I hope you will come along for the ride.
